Version

Bachmann Cat No 31-976 BR Standard 3MT 2-6-2T no ‘82005’.  Made in China. 3 pole motor.

Appearance

The loco captures the appearance of the prototype well, when compared with colour photographs of the original Swindon built locos.  The 82045 locomotive Trust is building a replica of one of these locos at Bridgnorth on the Severn Valley Railway and when finished this will carry the same livery as 82005 viz BR WR lined green with late crest.  These were the only BR Standard tank locos to carry both green (fully lined or unlined) and black liveries. The smokebox door can be opened and when this is done it can be seen that the tube plate is too far forward, but this compromise enables more space in the boiler for a DCC chip.

Detail

I have not fitted any detailing parts, but there are sufficient parts to add interest to the basic model.

Performance

Performance straight from the box was smooth, even though a 3-pole motor had been fitted.  The loco will easily handle a lightweight passenger train or a branch line freight.  With a little running in duties on empty coaching stock trains should be viable.

Maintenance

Use the loco regularly and oil the mechanism sparingly in accordance with the Bachmann operating instructions.  I haven’t fitted a decoder but an 8 pin plug with blanking plate is pre-installed in the loco.

Comments

The modelling standard is excellent and is a vast improvement on the offering from Tri-ang in the late fifties.

Overall Ranking

10/10.  I intend to buy examples of the lined black versions in the future.
