Version

158739 Scotrail ‘Swoosh’ 31-508

Appearance

Top paint finish and accurate moulding means that it captures the look of the 158 perfectly. Headlight clusters also look spot on – very important for a diesel model!

Detail

I think I broke one of the detail parts simply through rough handling – a fixing on the through-door section. No couplings were provided for operating these units in multiple, but there were some additional details supplied in the box. I didn’t bother fitting these, as the unit looks convincing as it is, with finely moulded detail on the body and underframe.

Performance

The version I had ran smoothly at first, with a centrally mounted 5-pole motor. However, after about 6 months a problem with the gear chain meant that it stuttered and stalled when accelerating, but as it was out of warranty I repaired it myself. This resulted in the unit running with only 3 axles driving, but it was back to normal with plenty of power for the 2-car unit.

Maintenance

No DCC socket so a decoder had to be hard wired, and the lights also stopped working at one end. Not too bothered about these issues, although it’s a good job my messy wiring was hidden by the smoked glazing.

Comments

Good model of my favourite multiple unit, but needing a DCC socket to avoid hard wiring. Performance improved after some tweaks!

Overall ranking

7/10

Version
Class 158 2 Car DMU, Arriva Trains Wales livery.

Appearance
The train looks great, just it is annoying that the windows are blacked out, I like to see the trains inside.

Detail
The detail is reasonable, but not great, Bachmann please try a bit harder.

Performance
Loco runs perfectly smooth, cannot fault it.

Maintenance
Never been able to run the train enough due to the fault. My layout is all DC.

Comments
The train came to me with a broken front bogie, a wire is blocking it from turning the other way. I am ridiculously annoyed by this, and has registered the train useless as I am too scared of breaking it to open it up, so when I get round to it is going back to Bachmann, and I will hope that this rather pricy train will work properly.

Overall Ranking
1/10 – but once the fault is fixed I would change this ranking.
