Heljan Falcon

Heljan weathered Br Blue Falcon Ref 5304 RRP £129
Having never seen the real loco I must say the model does seem to be a good recreation of what I have seen in books. The weathering is reasonably good but little variation of shades or tone.
This model has wire handrails all round and a number of headcodes to cut out and insert in the headcode box. there are also red tail lights. The roof features the off-set twin roof grilles which are see through with fans below. This model features the Falcon symbol on one side of the body and a Hippo on the other side which was apparently had been painted on by depot staff when the Falcon crests were stolen from one side. The underside tanks are nicely detailed. two buffer beams are supplied one with all pipes the other ,more slim line that will not obstruct the coupling.
As usual with Heljan model , 4 axle drive , heavy chassis and five pole motor mean smooth powerful operation of prototypical loads on either DC or DCC.
Like most Heljan models the body just unclips for either maintenance or 8 pin decoder fitting.
Expensive for its standard but not bad for a limited edition. It was a brave move for heljan to start producing these one off locos and I’m glad they did.
Overall Ranking
I give this 9/10 as it was the best of the mainline release Heljan did, better than Kestrel or Lion detail wise. I’m glad it was a hit as it gave Heljan the reason to produce other off beat models.
